See yourself striding confidently into a bigger, brighter future. - Feels pretty good, huh?

Who is this James guy, anyway? Print E-mail

First, the official blurb ...

James is a certified trainer of NLP who is fiercely committed to delivering the highest possible standard of NLP training in an uncompromisingly ethical and honourable fashion.  His background prior to NLP encompasses a rich variety of experiences, ranging from his unversity studies in comparative religion to a promising career in sales, to a brief stint as a teacher of meditation, to an "interesting and instructive" period as a pool shark - though not necessarily in that order.

Since the late 1990s, however, James has focused his energies exclusively on learning, mastering and teaching NLP.  During this time he has trained and coached hundreds of NLP practitioners, and spent a number of years as one of two main trainers for Australia's foremost business oriented NLP training company, before Developing Magic was established as an independent NLP training provider in 2005.

Having studied with and incorporated the approaches of several leading figures in the field, including such notables as NLP co-originator John Grinder and renowned early NLP pioneer Steve Andreas, James blends together a variety of different perspectives, and is occasionally described as one of the field's 'rising stars'.  He is also frequently invited to appear as a special guest trainer at courses conducted elsewhere in Australia and around the world.

Driven by his ongoing exploration of the things that shape our perceptions and experience, James enjoys a growing reputation in the wider NLP community for his expertise in the area of informal influence.  Other areas of specialisation include lateral, critical and systemic thinking skills, and the elicitation and utilisation of altered states of consciousness.

You will find James' training style to be informal, entertaining and down to earth, with an emphasis on active group participation.  His particular combination of strict rigour and casual playfulness is a reflection of his firm belief in balancing hard work with plenty of fun.

And if you want to meet the person rather than the NLP trainer ...

I like cats, and share a house with one - her name is Sparkle.  I'd also like it to be known that Sparkle was not named by me.  I'm an avid moviegoer and I really don't cook, although I enjoy food immensely.  Some of my favourite foods include butter chicken from Roti Boti in Hampton and fresh churros with liquid white chocolate on the side from San Churro in Fitzroy.  And good popcorn - which is a definite factor in my being such an avid moviegoer ...

I'm a great admirer of Joss Whedon and Terry Pratchett - geniuses both, who are shaping the minds of people all over the world in wonderful ways.  I tip my hat to these magnificent men.  Metaphorically, that is.  I don't actually wear a hat.  But if I did wear a hat, you can be sure that there would be tipping going on.  Probably even doffing.

My tastes in music could be described as mildly eclectic, although I generally favour anything with some funk to it, especially if there's a horn section involved.  Also, I know all the songs from the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer off by heart - and I've been known to sing along with some enthusiasm.

While I don't follow any sports, I'm very into pool - so much so that I plan to open a pool room in the next couple of years.  I used to play a lot of snooker, but recently I've been seduced by some American pool variations.  The games I play the most these days are 9-ball and 14.1 continuous.  My favourite pro player is Mike Massey, also known as "Tennessee Tarzan".  Oh - and as cheesy as they are, I just can't help liking the nicknames they give to pro pool players in the US.  My favourite at the moment (from the women's pro tour):  Helena "The Sledgehammer" Thornfeldt.

If I'm not training or doing business related stuff, I can usually be found either at a cafe with friends, at a cinema, on a table at Kings (great pool hall), or in transit between any of the above.

And last - but far from least ... my other coat is a Browncoat.
